Happy Halloween!

Monday, October 31st, 2011

I have to admit that secretly I wish I was still a little girl again when this day rolls around every year. Who doesn’t love getting dressed up and going door to door to gather candy from all your neighbors? Halloween is such a fun holiday for both the young and the old. In our household, since we have no children of our own yet, we dress up our two Boxers! While Sophie loves her Lady Bug Costume, Homer on the other hand is not as happy with his as a Spartan Baseball player. No he is not a Michigan fan, just not a fan of clothing! Above is some Halloween Inspiration for those that would love a Halloween Wedding.

Happy Halloween to all!

Wedding Planning Websites

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Are you one of those brides who are not sure what the next step in the planning process is or want one place where all of your wedding information can be organized?  If so, a wedding planning website is an important tool you should consider using.  There are a ton of wedding planning websites out there that offer a lot of useful information.  Some of the more common wedding planning websites are The Knott, , Wedding Wire and our personal favorite and one we use, My Wedding Workbook,  that is available for all our planning clients.

Here are the top 5 reasons a bride should use a wedding planning website:

1. Organization-Wedding planning websites are useful because you can organize all of your information in one spot.  You can do things like put pictures up for wedding ideas, manage your budget, upload your guest list, and track your RSVP’s.  One thing I really like about myweddingworkbook.com is that there are different categories for different events of your wedding.  This way you do not mix up budgets or ideas for the different events.  You can do things like have a guest list for your bridal shower and a separate guest list for you wedding reception or have your vendors listed for different events.  You do not have to go through your list and figure out which item is for what event.

2. Communication-A wedding planning website is useful because you can use it to communicate with your guests.  When you sign up on a wedding planning website, they give you your own website for free that you can put important wedding details on for your guest.  This is a central spot for everyone and is especially helpful for out of town guests.  When you send out your Save the Dates, you can put your wedding website address on there and guests can get all of the updated wedding information.  With My Wedding Workbook, there is an option to password protect a page on your personal website.  This can be a good option because if you are just communicating with your bridal party about something then not all of your guests can see it.

3. Budget- Many wedding planning websites offer a budget tool.  This is a nice option because you are able to update your budget online and can see how much you still owe and where money is going.  With My Wedding Workbook, you can make your own categories and can choose to designate how much you want to spend per category.  You set your budget total and then decide how much you want to spend per category.  You can do this two ways; either choose how much you want to spend dollar wise per category or you can put in a percent per category that you want to spend.  If you choose dollar wise it will subtract that amount from your total budget but if you do percent wise, it tells you how much you should spend per category and then takes it out of your budget.

4. Track RSVP’s- Tracking your RSVP’s online makes it easy to keep track of who has RSVP’d and who hasn’t.  Most wedding planning websites offer the option to have your guests RSVP on your personal wedding website.  This makes it easier for the bride because it is one less thing you have to do.  Guests just go on the website and let you know if they are coming or not and if you have a dinner option, they can let you know what they select.  This also saves you money because you do not have to buy stamps for your RSVP’s or have RSVP cards printed.  Just put your wedding website on the invitation and tell guest to RSVP that way.  Make sure to put an alternative option for those guests who do not have access to the Internet, such as a phone number to call and RSVP.  Another option would be to have RSVP cards printed for those that you know do not have Internet access.

5. Helpful Hints- Wedding planning websites are useful because they give you helpful hints for your wedding.  The knot.com is helpful because it has pictures of real weddings so you can get idea of what you like for your wedding.  My Wedding Workbook  has a calendar that you can put all of your important dates on and there is also a task calendar that you can use to make sure you are doing wedding stuff on time.  It also has a whole bunch of worksheets that you can use for your vendors and other wedding projects.

Make sure to take a look at different wedding planning websites.  They might offer most of the same things but some wedding websites offer different options and can be more helpful than others.   You need to find the one best meets your needs.

Erin and Aaron – November 10, 2011

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

I have to admit when the Fall season approaches, I do tend to get a little sad because it means that Summer is coming to an end. But that also means that there is going to be lots of beautiful dahlias to choose from at my favorite little farm, Hamilton Dalhias. When I first sat down with Erin, she bought with her an inspirational picture that she had fallen in love with. Her inspirational bouquet was filled with lots of dahlias, dark purple calla lilies, with pops of green berries and willow. It was a something that was right up our teams’ alley. Then she shared that they were planning a “Garden Gnome” theme to their wedding, you can only imagine my excitement. I have a love for these little guys and rumor has it there might be even a couple in my gardens! Please enjoy the lovely imagines from my dear friend Lynell from Lizzie’s Photo. And a huge thank you for introducing me to Erin and Aaron!

Erin and Aaron, thank you so much for allowing us to be part of your special day!  Best wishes for amazing life together!

After the Proposal

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

He drops to his knee and looks deep into your eyes and asks you to be his wife; a moment we all dream of. But after the proposal many people wonder what to do next. And the one question you are going to be asked over and over, “So when is the big day?!?” Choosing a date is very important but not the most important task in the wedding planning process; setting a budget is.

When setting a budget, you need to make sure it’s realistic and attainable for both you the couple and anyone that is contributing to the wedding. Talk with your families and find out how much they will be assisting you with. Once that has been determined you need to think about what is the best way to keep track of these gifts along with the money that you as the couple would be contributing. Would you be putting your money in a shared account with the contributors or in individual accounts? Shared accounts are sometimes better because it is easier to keep track of all the expense. If all of the money goes in and out from one account and all parties can see how much is in there at any given time. Also if you are contributing to your own wedding, you need to make sure you are able to put a certain amount of money away each month and by the time your wedding comes around you are able to pay for everything with ease.

Once you have a budget set it will help you determine in setting your actual wedding date. Summer months can be more expensive than winter months at certain venues. Some vendors also tend to have different prices for different seasons so make sure you keep this in mind when picking the date. You may want a summer wedding but winter pricing may be more in your budget range. Also make sure everyone agrees on what area of vendor selections are most important in the budget and then allocate the rest of the budget to the remaining vendor. Tracking your budget is also very important. I personally like the budget tracking tool that our online planning gives our planning clients. It gives them the access to look at what areas they have decide to allocate their budget to. And then they are able to input their payments and also set up reminders for upcoming payments. It really makes life a bit easier for a busy couple.

Once a budget is set, then you can pick your date and be able to figure out how long you have to plan your wedding. A year engagement is the average amount of time for couples to be engaged. This gives you time to plan everything and you don’t feel rushed. The popular wedding venues tend to be booked at least a year in advance so having a long engagement allows for you to be able to get what you want. Once you figure out those two crucial items, budget and date, you are ready to start the fun stuff such as choosing colors and visiting locations.

Design Concept – Pawlik wedding Part 2

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Who would have thought that a simple peacock feather and a design in the carpet could be the inspiration for such an amazing wedding? When we first sat down with Mike and Tonya to chat about the design elements they wanted for their wedding, they were very clear that they wanted an ultra-modern feel. As a designer, we wanted it to be bold but also inviting to their guests. The couple also wanted a venue that could accommodate both the ceremony and the wedding celebration following with ease; The Eve accomplished all the goals that we set forth in a perfect venue for this stunning wedding.

The venue was also the inspiration for many of our design elements. We decided early on that we wanted a bold color palette of Dark Purple and Platinum with a splash of a bright Turquoise to match the current color scheme of the space. The carpet design also played an important role in the inspiration for the unique “Kings Table” that was designed specifically for this wedding. The carpet had a serpentine design element to it that really intrigued the groom and our designers as well. Our team was well aware that we would need a professional to design and manufactured the table so we paired up with the talented team from Events By ICandy. Jill and Alex worked together to manufacture and assemble a table that fit our guest list of 66 people to a tee!

The King’s Table was dressed in dark platinum table coverings from Special Occasions. We also decided the table needed a pop of color so we added a glass purple charger from Special Events and paired with a turquoise colored napkin with an escort/menu card tucked in that were designed by Abbey of Syd Design. The center of the table was adorned with lovely arrangements of Various Orchids, Calla Lilies, Allium, Hydrangeas, Seeded Ecu, and Purple Monte placed in various shaped vases of black and white.

As much as my client loved the space that we choose, there were two things they did want to change. Part of the look of The Eve is the exposed pipework above the dance floor and the multiple televisions that are fixed to the brick walls. For the look we were going for, we knew early on that we need to dress both of these areas up. To do this, we again worked with Special Events to do some pipe and drape in the areas that we had concerns with. Above the dance floor, Mike and his team found the perfect dark platinum to match our linens and then wrapped the poles in a matching dark purple that they used to drape the walls to cover the televisions. Their work again added the dramatic look that both we at EOE and our client were striving for. We also had them construct a beautiful backdrop behind the stunning wedding cake from Mirabella and desserts that were severed after dinner.

And finally my favorite part of the room was the actual ceremony space. We choose to cover the chairs with a black spandex chair cover with a turquoise chair tie both from Special Occasions. The front of the aisle was adorned with two large arrangements of flowers in 5 foot white vases. The center of the aisle might honestly be my favorite design element yet. Again we worked with ICandy and they designed a 40 foot carpet aisle runner with a peacock feather design along with custom lampshades we placed on large black vases at the end of the aisle. Both of these elements can be found now in our client’s home to remind them of their wedding day.

I like to thank the all the wonderful vendors that worked with our team to make our clients vision come to reality. And a very special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Pawlik for allowing us to be such an important part of your day. You both were so wonderful and I personally miss our chats. Best wishes to a life filled with happiness!

Mr. and Mrs. Mike Pawlik – August 4th, 2011 Part 1

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

When I first met with Mike and Tonya, I knew I would love working with them immediately! They were a couple with a great taste and really wanted to make their wedding a night for their guest to remember.  They also didn’t want the typical/traditional ceremony and reception because it really didn’t reflect either of their personalities.  When chatting with them, it became very clear what they really wanted was to host an evening out with the people that mean the most to them as a couple and get married in the middle of it.  So with a guest list of 66 people, we helped them design an evening that will be remembered by all that attended.

Mike and Tonya’s evening started out with a very elegant cocktail hour where guests were greeted by the couple with the Fred Knapp Trio playing in the background.  Guests nibbled on butler style hors d’oeuvres of Goat Cheese stuff Figs, Tuna Tartar Cones, and Foie Gras Lollopops while sipping on glasses of passed champagne.  The couple also selected a signature drink of a Bloody Mary Shooter that were served with an oyster on the half shell.

As guests continued to mingle and enjoy the festivities, Tonya, her daughters, and her mother slipped away to help the bride slip into her wedding gown.  It was truly amazing to watch as three generations of strong women become so emotional as they dressed and bonded for those few minutes alone before the bride walked down the aisle. Once our stunning bride was dressed, our Officiant asked all the guest to please make their way into the alcove.

As the song “Cars’ from Snow Patrol began to play, Mike was walked down the aisle by his two beautiful daughters followed by Tony also escorted by her two beautiful daughters.  As the two joined together in a ceremony designed with them in mind, guest were able to get a glance into the love they share for each. And after that first kiss, the couple walked down the aisle in style to their favorite artist, Kid Rock.

Afterwards Mike and Tonya enjoyed a few minutes alone as their guest made their way back into cocktail hour as the Gilmore Collection prepared for an gourmet meal design just for this wedding.

The newly Mr. and Mrs. Mike Pawlik toasted their guest just before everyone was served.  The guest enjoyed a Filet with Sea Bass, that was so flavorful or a Fillet with Lump Crab, that melted in your mouth! After dinner guest helped themselves to gourmet deserts by Gilmore along with absolutely gorgeous cake designed by Ken of Mirabella.

Fall Inspired

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

As I sit at my desk working today, I’m able to still enjoy some of the fall colors on our many trees outside.  Fall personally is my favorite time of year.  I love the crispness to the air and gorgeous views of the nature around me. And fall weddings are by far my favorite to plan and design over any other season. This time of year is so rich in color and texture that just screams “get married“.  I love the deep oranges, dark browns, and deep merlot colors of flowers that bloom so beautifully right now.  Above are just two imsprations that I felt really popped out at me today.  The lovely bouquet just seems so perfect for this time of year with it’s warm colors with a feel of earthliness to it.  And the above centerpiece I absolutely adore and it might be found this year on my Thanksgiving Day table.  I love how the designer took just a simple gourd pumpkin and added a small hurricane to dress up the center of the table.  It’s inexpensive but has such a great fall feel to it.  The only thing different I would do is add small/short vases of flowers to dress it up just a tad more.

Happy Fall to everyone!  Dee~

Our newest event coordinator

Monday, October 17th, 2011

Hi Everyone!  My name is Holly Kuyers.   Some of you may be hearing a lot from me so I thought it would be a  good time to introduce myself.  I’m the newest event coordinator for Elements of Elegance.  I started working with Dee this past wedding season as her assistant  and loved it!!!  We definitely kept busy and worked with some very amazing couples.  My favorite part about a wedding is when the bride sees everything all put together!

Here is a little bit about me.  I am engaged to my amazing fiancé Ryan and am currently planning my own wedding so I know what brides are going through.  This past December I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management and an emphasis in Meeting and Event Planning.  Other than planning my wedding and working, I enjoy being with my family, friends, and my dog Jack.

You will be hearing a lot from me about what to do during wedding planning and the newest wedding trends that are taking place.  I can’t wait to work with all of our brides this season.
