Engagements!!

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Most who know me will tell you I am a complete romantic at heart.  So when I first meet with a couple I love to hear about how they met, where they fell in love, and how the proposal was done.  I love seeing the happiness on their faces as they share their story.  It gives me a lot of insight on who they are as a couple and how they envision their wedding day.

But I especially love when I have someone who calls me for advice on how to propose to their loved one.  I think I get as excited as they do about them “popping” the question.  So what advice do I give when the request come about? Well it’s pretty straight forward and I love to share it with everyone.

One, make it personal and about the two of you.  I always say if you can’t see yourself doing something corny like putting a ring in a desert or a glass of wine, then don’t.  There are so many different ways to ask her or even his hand in marriage.

Second, find a way to document it if at all possible.  My most romantic groom hired a photographer to follow the couple for an entire day (with outfit changes so his fiancé wouldn’t notice her).  She was able to capture all the lovely moments this couple shared that day and the sheer joy on their faces when she said yes.  Now I don’t think you have to go to this extreme, but someone capturing it on video or snapping pictures will be something that you will cherish later.

And finally incorporate something special that when you see it as a couple in the future will remind you of the special moment.  I had a bride tell me once that when she smells Peonies, she always thinks back to her wedding day.  And I know whenever I see a Mastercraft Ski boat I think back to the night my husband propose to me on one knee at Bay Pointe.

So what are your stories?  As the romantic I would love to hear them.
